Spider Facts

Spiders are arachnids, not insects — they have eight legs, two main body segments, and no wings or antennae. With roughly 50,000 known species, they inhabit every continent except Antarctica and have colonised virtually every terrestrial ecosystem, from tropical rainforests to high-altitude mountain tundra. The smallest spider on record, Patu digua, is smaller than a pinhead; the largest, the Goliath birdeater tarantula, has a leg span approaching 30 centimetres.

Silk is a spider's defining superpower. A single spider can produce up to seven distinct types of silk, each engineered for a different purpose: sticky capture spirals, structural frame threads, egg-sac wrapping, prey bundling, and drag-line lifelines. Spider silk is, weight for weight, stronger than steel and more elastic than nylon — properties researchers have spent decades trying to replicate synthetically for medical sutures and bulletproof materials.

Despite their fearsome reputation, the vast majority of spiders are harmless to humans and provide an extraordinary ecological service. A single hectare of meadow can contain over a million spiders collectively consuming more insect biomass per year than the entire human population eats in meat. Jumping spiders, meanwhile, have demonstrated problem-solving, detour navigation, and what researchers describe as curiosity — pausing to examine novel objects with their large forward-facing eyes in ways that suggest active attention rather than simple reflex.
