Horse Facts

Galloping facts about horses — their history, biology, and surprising quirks.

Horses (Equus caballus) have shaped human history more profoundly than almost any other domesticated animal. Domesticated on the Eurasian steppe approximately 5,500 years ago, horses transformed warfare, agriculture, and long-distance communication across every continent they reached. Horse biology produces several well-documented verified facts that contradict popular beliefs: horses can sleep standing up (a passive stay apparatus in their legs locks the joints to prevent them falling) but require lying-down sleep for full REM rest; they cannot vomit due to the one-way design of their digestive valve; and their eyes, positioned on the sides of their heads, give them nearly 360-degree vision with only two small blind spots — directly in front of and directly behind them.
