Parrots (order Psittaciformes) include approximately 400 species and represent one of the most cognitively advanced bird groups. Their ability to learn vocalised speech is matched by documented problem-solving ability that places them alongside corvids and great apes in comparative cognition studies. The African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is the best-studied; psychologist Irene Pepperberg's decades of research demonstrated that the species can learn and use spoken English labels for objects, colours, materials, and quantities in contexts that show genuine comprehension rather than mere conditioning — a finding that significantly changed scientific understanding of avian intelligence.

Parrots are long-lived animals — many large species, including macaws and cockatoos, can live 60–80 years in captivity, comparable to human lifespan. This longevity, combined with their cognitive capacity, creates significant welfare considerations: parrots kept in inadequate environments show behaviours associated with chronic stress, including feather-destructive behaviour, that researchers compare to stereotypies observed in captive mammals.

The kea (Nestor notabilis) of New Zealand is notable as the world's only alpine parrot, living in high-altitude environments and demonstrating problem-solving abilities that have made it a focus of comparative cognition research.
