Roaring facts about lions — the social cats whose reputation barely scratches the surface.

Lions (Panthera leo) are the only social members of the cat family Felidae, living in structured groups called prides that can include up to 40 individuals. Their cooperative hunting strategies and complex social hierarchy have made them one of the most studied large carnivores in ecological research. Several verified facts about lions contradict their popular portrayal: female lions perform approximately 85–90% of all hunting for the pride, while males primarily defend territory; lions can sleep up to 20 hours per day to conserve energy in hot climates; and a lion's roar, audible up to 8 km away, carries specific information about the individual's size and health that other lions use to make approach-or-retreat decisions.

Lion territory ranges from 20 to over 400 square kilometres depending on prey density. Territory boundaries are maintained through roaring, scent marking with urine and faeces, and direct confrontation with intruding males. Prides typically include 2–4 adult males, related by kinship, who form a coalition and jointly defend the territory against rival coalitions.

The Barbary lion — the subspecies that once ranged across North Africa — was declared extinct in the wild in the 1960s following centuries of hunting and habitat loss. Descendants of captive Barbary lions are maintained in a conservation breeding programme in Morocco.
