Frogs belong to the order Anura, one of three orders of amphibians, and represent one of the oldest surviving tetrapod lineages — the earliest frog ancestors date to approximately 250 million years ago. The roughly 7,000 known frog species occupy every continent except Antarctica and have adapted to an extraordinary range of environments, from the high-humidity Amazon basin to desert regions where they survive dry seasons buried underground. Frog biology produces numerous verified surprises: the gastric-brooding frog of Australia (Rheobatrachus silus) raised its young inside its stomach, suppressing its digestive system until the juveniles were ready to emerge — a reproductive strategy unique among vertebrates.
Frogs are considered indicator species — their permeable skin makes them highly sensitive to environmental pollution, making their population trends a reliable early signal of broader ecosystem health. The global decline in amphibian populations since the 1980s, attributed to habitat loss, climate change, and the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, is considered one of the most significant biodiversity losses currently documented.
