Old English is unintelligible to modern speakers — it makes Shakespeare look like modern Twitter.

Old English (roughly 5th–11th centuries) differs in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation so much that modern English speakers usually can’t understand it without study. A famous example is Beowulf, which looks almost like a different language entirely.
