The parachute was sketched by Leonardo da Vinci centuries before being tested.

Leonardo drew a parachute concept around the late 1400s, describing a canopy design intended to slow descent. Practical parachuting developed much later, and modern sport parachutes can reduce fall speeds to roughly 5–7 m/s at landing.
