Zippers were invented in 1891 and were originally called 'clasp lockers'.

Whitcomb L. Judson created an early zipper-like fastener in 1891, often called a “clasp locker” (or “clasp-locker”) and aimed at replacing buttons on boots. The modern reliable zipper came later through refinements (notably in the 1910s), but Judson’s work is the key starting point.
