Monet painted water lilies because people kept asking him to “touch grass.” So he painted it and stayed indoors anyway.

Monet painted his water lily series in his own garden at Giverny, which he designed, from the 1890s until his death in 1926. The 'touch grass' expression is modern internet slang, not something said in his time.
